Severe weather was taking its toll on Vermont on this date in 1996. Lightning struck and killed one person in Barre, VT. Late in the day and overnight, torrential downpours focused on the town of Grafton, washing out hundreds of roads, leaving only Rt. 121 as a means of access in and out of town. 3 to 5 inches of rain turned quiet brooks into rushing torrents, and caused an earthen dam to collapse.
