Residents in much of New England awoke to a soaking rain on this date in 1927, but there was no indication that the rain would continue for another 24 hours at alarming rates, climaxing in the awful flooding that became known as the Flood of ‘27, or the Great Vermont Flood, the grim standard to which all other floods are still compared. Why was it focused over Vermont? A stagnant front had stalled near the Vermont-New York border while a moisture-laden storm moved north. The final push over the Green Mountains produced a maximum release of water.
