Warm weather can really flex its muscles this time of year, thanks to a sun that is as strong as early September. On this date in 1987, in spite of a deep snow cover of a foot or more outside the Champlain Valley, readings soared to 70 degrees in Rutland, St. Johnsbury, and Enosburg Falls, and 74 in Hanover, NH. Though weather had been too cold for sugaring much of the month, these temperatures were too warm, and the season went on to be a disappointment for many.
