Early residents of the region were shocked by waking up to frost on this date in 1816, the infamous Year Without a Summer! Following snow in early June, summer weather returned, with a heat wave at the end of the month, but on this morning Middlebury, Williamstown, and Windsor in Vermont, as well as Lancaster in New Hampshire all noted light frost on the 8th or 9th, dropping to 34 degrees in Middlebury, though little damage was noted to crops.
