Over a century ago on this date, in 1917, the deepest part of the WWI cold wave sent thermometers to record levels. The coldest weather of the 20th century sent thermometers to -43 in St. Johnsbury, their all-time record low. Burlington was below zero from the afternoon of the 28th through January 1st, nearly 100 hours below zero. It was also the second of three consecutive days during which no official thermometer in Vermont would rise above zero.
