The European continent knew late spells of warmth that melted the early frosts and snows as St. Martin’s Summer. Although St. Martin’s Day, or Martinmas, occurs specifically on the 11th, the name became synonymous with the mild spells of weather. One of the mild spells was ending on this date in 1948, the warmest November on record for most locations.
