On this date in 1989, the morning brought an unusual patch-work of various sheets and blankets and just about anything else you might grab as a surprisingly early frost hit some of the cold spots rather hard. Rochester, VT dipped to 28 degrees, while Union Village Dam was not much more comfortable at 29 degrees. It was a forerunner of the bitter cold December which followed with the coldest averages of the 20th century.
