Each May from 1812 to 1817 featured a snowstorm. On this date in 1812, the first in this series of cold, backwards Mays began with the following comments from the Rev. William Bentley of Salem, MA, “Not a flower to be seen this Maying which the eye could anticipate for pleasure the next morning. Ice is seen all this week, and all the snow is not dissolved upon our hills. It is a Canada season….”
