There are many notes of very smokey air throughout New England from the 10th to the 18th of September in 1908. Forest fires in Canada sent a great deal of smoke south on prevailing northwest winds. Extremely dry weather that originally sparked the fires reached into the region – only 0.35 inches for the month was reported in Northfield, 0.68 inches in St. Johnsbury, and just a little over an inch in Burlington.
