Over a century ago, in 1899, a severe nor’easter wreaked havoc throughout New England. Heavy snow was blown into great drifts, and measured two feet on the level in southern New Hampshire, and 20 inches in Chelsea and Woodstock, VT. But 70 mph winds on Cape Cod sunk the S.S. Portland, claiming 191 lives, thus the storm has always been known as the “Portland Storm”.
