Very dry and very warm weather was testing many wells on this date, in 1966. Long-term drought is a rarity in New England, but from 1961 through 1966, precipitation was well below normal. Adding to the stress was a stretch of 26 days with temperatures reaching 80 degrees or more. The drought was finally broken during the fall with several episodes of heavy rain.
