On this date in 1953, people were beginning to look for ways to beat the heat. A brief but intense heat wave climaxed on the 18th and 19th. Both Cornwall and Wilder, VT topped out at 100 degrees, while Bellows Falls reached 102 – the hottest official reading for the second half of the 20th century. Although 100 degree temperatures have been more rare in the past 60 years, the increased forest cover, and NOT a change in the weather, is the reason.
