The first of two warm spells began on this date in 1982, with many communities climbing above 60 degrees, including Rochester and Montpelier, VT at 63, and Berlin, NH topping out at 64. This ensured that natural snow cover disappeared virtually everywhere except the very highest peaks. Mount Mansfield had one inch of snow and 47 degrees. The rest of that winter held very little joy for skiers.
