After a relatively cool summer, on this date in 1945 a late-season heat wave was in progress. It started on the 6th when temperatures reached the upper 80s to low 90s, then peaked on the 7th at 94 in Burlington and 92 in St. Johnsbury. Thermometers bubbled to 94 again on the 8th in Burlington, and still 90 on the 9th, making it the latest extended spell of hot weather on record.
