STEAM-powered Saturdays
with White Mountain Science, Inc.
We hope to foster a more inclusive and diverse future, by encouraging and empowering groups that are underrepresented in STEM fields. This Saturday morning series, for girls and gender-expansive, non-binary, intersex, and transgender youth, ages 8 – 12, will explore different STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) topics each month.

Discovering Rainbows
In this workshop we will explore how sunlight transforms into the vibrant arcs of color that we see in the sky! We will discover the science behind rainbows as we unravel the mysteries of light refraction, dispersion, and reflection. Put your physicist knowledge to the test as we conduct hands-on experiments that demonstrate how light behaves. Join us in creative activities that showcases knowledge of the light spectrum, including obstacle courses, group activities, and creating your very own light art.

Constellations & Cultures & Catapults (CCC)
In this workshop we will focus on the three C’s: Catapults, Constellations & Cultures. We will be merging the science of catapults with stories about things that have been catapulted into the stars. Experience stories from around the world, planetarium science, and the thrill of launching your very own catapult. Join us for this final STEM class in our series as we wrap up with a fun and engaging mix of science, history, and the art of storytelling.

Physics of flight: Bird wings to Rocketships
In this workshop we will explore flight and its evolution. Flight evolution in this class refers not only to the biological evolution of wings but also the human evolution of flight machines. We will explore biological evolution, from dinosaurs to bats and birds. Then we will explore the history of human flight inventions, from gliders to planes to rockets. Join us on this exploration of flight science, where students will learn the fundamentals of flight mechanics and experiment with building their own wings.

STEAM: Monsters & Mythology
Help us to put the A in STEAM! In this workshop we will be exploring the science of monsters. Cultures all over the world have scary stories about monsters that we love to retell this time of year. During the spooky season we will examine monsters through the lens of art and science. What animal could have inspired these monsters? What could this monster’s biology be? What does the art of this monster tell me? Join us for spooky fun while we learn about monsters around the world, create monster puppets, and become experts in monster biology!
