Only about once each century does a full-blown hurricane cross New England and reach the interior. In the 19th century it was the Great September Gale of 1815 that roared up through Connecticut into Massachusetts and then New Hampshire overnight from the 22nd to the 23rd. This track favors heavy rain and less wind over Vermont, hence the flooding reported in the Brattleboro Reporter, and the “violent storm” in the Vermont Journal from Windsor.
