Localized but extreme rainfall fell in less than 12 hours on this date last year, 2024, over portions of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, possibly some of the most intense rainfall ever observed in the state. 5 to 9 inches of rain fell in northwest Essex county, and southeast Caledonia County, including 8.08 inches at the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury, more than 3 inches greater than the previous 24 hour record. Catastrophic flooding resulted, with hundreds of roads and bridges destroyed.
