On this date in 1997 the sun came out to reveal a scene of terrible destruction. St. Swithin’s Day rains severely flooded portions of northwestern Vermont, particularly the community of Montgomery Center. 6 to 8 inches of rain in less than 6 hours washed out numerous roads and a few bridges, isolating Montgomery Center, and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage through the northern Green Mountains.
