Wet weather in June of 2023, and flash flooding in central and southern VT on July 7th, resulted in unusually wet conditions, leading to the devastating flooding of July 10th and 11th, known now as the Great Vermont Flood. 4 to 8 inches fell in 48 hours, the greatest being 9.2 inches in Calais, VT. Flooding was widespread and severe, second only to the Flood of ’27, with the Winooski River in Montpelier cresting 2 feet higher than it did during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. 2 fatalities were reported, but forecasts and preparations were deemed much better than for Irene in August, 2011.
