On this date in 1965 a tremendous early season cold spell was underway. Blustery northwest winds brought cold air to the mountains first, with a dusting of snow on Mt. Mansfield, and 2.5 inches of snow on Mt. Washington, a record for the earliest of the season. Lighter winds on the 30th and 31st brought record early frost to many valleys, as well as the coldest August temperatures ever recorded, tying or setting state records for all New England.
