The Dog Days are over! However, that is NOT a weather forecast. The Dog Days are so-named for the brightest star in our skies, prominent in our winter skies – the Dog Star, known as Sirius. Seen at night in winter, it is in the daytime sky in summer. From July 3rd to August 11, the sun is at its closest position to Sirius when viewed at sunrise, and ancient astronomers thought the combination of the sun and the star made this the hottest time of the year.
