In most years, maple sugaring is done by now, or nearly so, and we move on to other activities. However, following one of the most severe winters of the 18th century, the famous Long Winter of 1798-99, sugaring finally began in Hardwick, VT. The month of April started with four feet of snow on the ground. During the first two weeks of April, additional 2 feet of snow fell. Snow remained on the ground for the rest of the month.
