40 years ago on this date, in 1986, severe thunderstorms pounded the region with damaging winds and hail. North Hartland and Brookfield both reported 1 inch diameter hail, with 3/4 inch hail falling in Burlington. This same system progressed into Maine, where hail up to 4 inches in diameter fell, and in places accumulated to 6 inches on the ground. Record cold followed the front, as Burlington tied its coldest June temperature ever, two days later on the 3rd, at 33 degrees. Numerous reports of frost were noted.
