A rare April heat wave was climaxing on this date during the Bicentennial year of the United States, 1976. Thermometers reached mid-summer levels, including 90 degrees in Montpelier and St. Johnsbury, 91 in Burlington, and 97 in Vernon, VT. These figures set records for the hottest weather so early in the year, as well as the hottest temperatures ever in April. This second record has since been broken during the hot April of 1990.
