Many birds are on the wing this time of year, as insect-eaters are finding the pickings becoming more scarce. Yellow-rumped warblers are joined by song sparrows, flickers, woodcocks, killdeer and bluebirds. Robins may be flocking, though their migration only sends them to the edge of the snow cover during the winter, and Canada geese have established local populations in portions of southern New England. On the other hand, snow geese descend on the Champlain basin in extraordinary numbers, as many as 5,000 can be seen at one time at the Dead Creek wildlife refuge in Addison.
