The north-south orientation of the Champlain valley bounded by relatively high mountains through the Adirondacks and Green Mountains, forces south winds to accelerate through with greater speed. When Hurricane Hazel pushed into central New York state on this date in 1954, this resulted in a powerful south wind, augmented by the Champlain valley to produce winds gusting to 70 mph in Burlington, though the track of the storm to the west kept rainfall to a minimum.
