Dusting off the records books on this date in 1850, heavy rains caused serious flooding through southern and southwestern Vermont, into the Berkshires of Massachusetts. A tropical storm tracking north from Chesapeake Bay into eastern New York, induced a moist southeast wind off the ocean, dumping heavy rains. Reports of over 3 inches in Burlington and 5 inches in Montpelier were on the northern edge of the heavier rain. Floods were the highest of the 1800s to that date in southern Vermont.
