An unusually heavy snowstorm on the 18th of October 1783 leaving over a foot of snow in the mountains, combined with heavy rains on this date in 1783 to produce a flood due to the melting snow, the worst flood experienced by settlers up to that time. Several mills and mill dams near Windsor, VT were washed away, as were a number of them in Claremont, NH. Numerous bridges were destroyed by the flood, impeding travel for weeks to come.
