Today is the peak of summer, at least judging by the crest of the warmest average temperatures of the year. This is just over 4 weeks after the longest day of the year, during which the sunlight has decreased by more than a half hour. So why the delay? It is called seasonal lag – the extra time due to the slower response of the Earth to the Sun’s energy. As the days get shorter, average temperatures very slowly decrease the rest of the summer.
