On this date 25 years ago, in 1998, heavy rains had swollen the Mad River beyond its banks. Rainfall of 4 inches or more in the mountains surrounding the Mad River caused the worst flooding there since the Great Flood of 1927. Elsewhere numerous roads and bridges were washed out, including Warren and Bristol, Vermont, and Keesville, Peru, and Saranac, New York. It was the first of many wet episodes during the wettest summer on Burlington, Vermont’s records.
