On this date in 1806, a total solar eclipse darkened the midday hours of central New England. Totality lasted about 3 minutes and 50 seconds in Bennington. The area of totality included Bennington and Windham counties, and extreme southern portions of Rutland and Windsor counties. The weather was clear, affording a perfect view of the rare event, the only other in Vermont’s history occurring in the Northeast Kingdom in 1932.
