You might want to be careful, or at least consider the following, when locating your thermometer. The standard height for observing the temperature is five feet, but in a study done at UVM a number of years ago, temperatures were measured at 5 feet and at 3 inches above the ground. Because cold air is heavier than warm air, the coldest temperatures were found near the ground, averaging 4 degrees colder – a big difference when thinking about frost.
