Although the character of spring includes damp ground and mud season, it is the spring when forest fire danger is at its annual maximum here in northern New England, northern New York, and southern Quebec. Dead grass and vegetation, last fall’s leaves, and tree debris from winter storms along the forest floors, dry out very quickly in the strong spring sunshine, providing fuel. Humidity levels can drop greatly during a breezy, warm afternoon. Please check with your local fire warden before doing any burning outside during the next several weeks.
