Like something out of modern-day politics, the election of Thomas Jefferson in March 1801, the first change in party leadership in the U.S., became a scapegoat, blaming Jefferson for the floodwaters cresting across northern New England on this date in 1801. Heavy rain and melting snow burst many mill dams, and washed out a great number of bridges, and was known at the time as the “Jefferson Flood”.
