In most years, March features cycles of freezing and thawing temperatures, favored by maple sugar producers. But this also changes the structure of the remaining snow to “corn snow”, as droplets of water formed during the day freeze into crumbly ice crystals at night. The snow becomes more and more dense, but also more rotten, making it subject to rapid melting by a late winter rain.
