Once the foliage is out and the gardens are well established, frost is rare. But when it does happen, even the trees can suffer. Such was the case on this date in 1986 when record cold sent the mercury down to the 30s throughout the region. In the colder hollows there was frost, including Kirby, VT, where the temperature fell to 26 degrees, causing isolated but severe damage to the foliage. The dead foliage gives this summer frost the name “black frost”.
