High in the east-southeast at 10:30 are three bright stars which make up the Summer Triangle. The highest and brightest is Vega, lower and to the left is Deneb, and lowest and more toward the south is Altair. Altair comes from an Arabic word meaning the “flying or soaring eagle”.

Throughout the year, the distance between the Earth and the Sun varies. Today at 1:30 PM EDT, the earth will reach its maximum distance from the Sun, a distance of 94,502,962 miles. This is called aphelion. The opposite, the earth’s minimum distance from the Sun, is called perihelion, and will next occur on January 2, 2027.
Tuesday:
Today is the “seventh day of the seventh Moon” – moons being months – and is the traditional day for cultures in the Far East to celebrate the story of the Goddess of Weaving and the Handsome Farmer, more familiar to us as the Summer Triangle, directly overhead shortly around 1:30 AM EDT.
