The Waning Gibbous moon will rise in the east-southeast at 11:21 PM. After midnight the planet Saturn will rise at around 12:40, and will chase to Moon across the southeastern sky until Saturn gets bleached out by the gathering dawn at around 4:40 AM. The Moon will remain visible while continuing into the south, not setting in the west until well after dawn, at 10:49 AM.
Sunday:
High in the east-southeast at 10:30 are three bright stars which make up the Summer Triangle. The highest and brightest is Vega, lower and to the left is Deneb, and lowest and more toward the south is Altair. Altair comes from an Arabic word meaning the “flying or soaring eagle”.

Throughout the year, the distance between the Earth and the Sun varies. Today at 1:30 PM EDT, the earth will reach its maximum distance from the Sun, a distance of 94,502,962 miles. This is called aphelion. The opposite, the earth’s minimum distance from the Sun, is called perihelion, and will next occur on January 2, 2027.
